How it all started

I have always had a love for design and an aesthetic that can occupy a 3 dimensional space, My artistic beginnings started in New Zealand were I was inspired by friends and family who were creators, the uncles who were engineers that built and rode unicycles, friends that carved bone and greenstone all inspired me. In a family of cabinet makers and carpenters I trained in architectural drawing and have always practiced my art. My first exhibition was at the age of 20 and featuring 3 dimensional framed sculptures based around images of residential Greek architecture I saw in photographs. “Patmos doors” exhibition sold out and was an important step to the belief that what I created appealed to an audience. Over next 15 years of my working life I forged a career in Architectural frameless glass design. My wife Anna and I moved to Gippsland in country Victoria to raise our two boys in 2008.

And now…

Those little boys have become adults and I concentrate on my sculpture full time while dedicating as many hours as possible to the community through teaching skills, mentoring and volunteering.

As an artist craftsman I use timber, stone and steel to create the useful through to the whimsical by drawing out the unseen, mysterious and imaginative aspects from the seemingly obvious side of nature. An award winning member of the Association of Sculptors of Victoria I have exhibited widely since moving to Stratford in 2009 and have been commissioned for many pieces of public art throughout Australia.

Highlights of my artistic career include being part of the published international touring exhibition “A Gathering of spoons” and being Artist and Project manager for “the Stratford Arts trail” involving 7 artists, 9 public works, music, performance, storytelling and sculpture through festivals Australia installed in our own town.

Since 2019 I have been collaborating with glass artist Peter Cummings, we have created the ART COLT, a innovative studio space within the 1856 police stables building with a strong community and teaching element, in this incredible space is where you will find me most days!

I would like to thank the hundreds of other crafts people and artists that have dedicated time to encourage and teach me over the years, the association of sculptors Victoria who are a voluntary Artist run sculpture support organization and of cause my family whom without their encouragement and patience I would not be in the privileged position of practicing my art.
